A Journey of Strength, Support, and Second Chances

When Kailani Anguis shared her kidney transplant journey, she offered a deeply honest glimpse into the emotional and physical toll that kidney disease can take. As a mother, patient, and survivor, her story is one of resilience, love, and the life-changing impact of community support.

A Sudden Decline: From Medication to Dialysis

Just one year ago, Kailani’s health declined rapidly. Her kidneys began to fail due to severe dehydration connected to the medication Farxiga. Though she hadn’t yet reached complete kidney failure, the deterioration was swift and terrifying. Almost overnight, she was facing dialysis—a life-altering treatment few are ever truly prepared for.

Fortunately, after only three months on dialysis, Kailani received a life-saving kidney transplant—from her own son. It was a moment filled with emotional complexity and immense gratitude. “Accepting a kidney from your child isn’t easy,” she reflected, “but it saved my life.”

Guidance at a Critical Moment

As her health began to spiral, Kailani found support through Carly Hamid, Executive Director of the National Kidney Partner Foundation (NKP). Carly didn’t just offer empathy—she provided real help, including a referral to Dr. Brucculeri, who would become a central figure in Kailani’s care.

“I had no idea where to start or who to turn to,” Kailani recalled. “Carly didn’t just talk to me—she helped me take action.”

A Full-Circle Moment

After a recent follow-up appointment with Dr. Brucculeri, Kailani and Carly reunited in the same office where the journey began. Kailani was radiant—healthy, energized, and thriving. Just a year earlier, she had been unsure if she’d even be a transplant candidate.

Today, her transformation stands as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when quality medical care is paired with personal support and connection.

The Silent Struggle Before Dialysis

Kailani also spoke openly about a troubling gap in care: the lack of support before dialysis begins. “There were no pre-dialysis support groups, no one to talk to, no guidance,” she said.

Once she started dialysis, she encountered kindness and compassion from nurses, dietitians, and staff—but the journey up to that point had been isolating. Her experience underscores the importance of early intervention and emotional support even before clinical treatment begins.

Why Peer Support Matters

One of the most impactful elements of Kailani’s story is the role peer support played in her recovery. “Only someone who’s lived it can truly understand,” she said. “Even your closest family may not really get it. That’s why connecting with someone who’s been there makes such a difference.”

Hearing Carly’s own stories and encouragement gave Kailani something she desperately needed: hope. “She helped me believe that recovery—and a normal life—was possible.”

Normalizing Donation, Celebrating Courage

Kailani’s son’s decision to become her donor was both courageous and deeply moving. It also highlighted a broader truth: living donation, especially within families, carries emotional weight that’s often overlooked.

Carly emphasized the importance of sharing donor stories—not just to inspire, but to normalize and honor the act of giving. “Donors often say they gained more than they gave,” Carly noted. “Their stories help others move past fear and stigma.”

Carrying the Mission Forward

Kailani’s journey continues—not just as a recipient, but as a voice for others. She’s passionate about helping more people feel seen, supported, and hopeful. “This support saved me emotionally. I want others to experience that too.”

At the National Kidney Partner Foundation, that’s the heart of the mission: creating a strong, empathetic network for patients, caregivers, and donors across every stage of the kidney journey. Whether it’s navigating diagnosis, dialysis, or life post-transplant, no one should walk that road alone.
